History of SnailedIt!

What began as a curiosity among friends has grown to become Snailedit! Farms, the Midwest’s first snail farm.

Sometimes life hands you lemons and you need to make lemonade, and sometimes ‘Life’, the board game, hands you a ‘Start a Snail Farm’ card and you do just that. So goes the initial inspiration behind Snailedit! Farms.

I took the idea presented by the creators at Hasbro, and perceiving an opportunity to fill a niche in the Chicago food scene, I started Snailedit! Farms in 2019 with the goal to supply area restaurants with fresh, sustainable escargot.

As of this reading, we are still working through the red-tape to make that dream a reality, but in the meantime the team at Snailedit! is working to build awareness around Snail Farming in the United States as a viable form of agriculture and having fun while doing it.

Sustainability Work

Part of the Snailedit! mission is to better understand the environmental effects of our farm and how we can integrate into a sustainable urban agriculture environment

Maintenance of the snails requires daily check ins and use of resources. As Snailedit! operations grow and evolve we strive to keep an organic and healthy natural environment for the snails while monitoring our ecological impact.

With this in mind Snailedit! has partnered with Plant Chicago in the past, leaders in urban agriculture and sustainability, to learn how to be more efficient in our production of snails by utilizing and reusing materials and conserving energy consumption.

Principals learned through participation in the Plant Chicago Circular Economy Leaders Network (A circular economy is a system used to regenerate natural ecosystems, minimize waste and distribute equitably) have been integrated into Snailedit! operations as we expand
